We all strive for a well-toned, attractive body.* Sometimes, no matter how hard we work out, or how well we control our weight, we cannot achieve our goals. Body surgery can effectively eliminate excess fat and skin and sculpt specific areas of your body.* Abdominoplasty, liposuction and body contouring offer you the opportunity to reshape your body to gain smoother contours and an enhanced appearance.*
BODY SURGERY PROCEDURES
Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck
The abdomen contains an inner girdle made of connective tissue and muscles. Also known as your “core”, this girdle holds the internal organs in place. Pregnancy, childbirth, and weight loss can all stretch this girdle and leave you with excess abdominal skin, stretch marks and laxity of the abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck can help to restore your figure by removing excess skin and fat, tightening muscle laxity, and removing stretch marks.* Often times the scars can be hidden within the bikini or pantie line.*
The abdominoplasty procedure
These procedures are performed under general anesthesia in the hospital or an outpatient surgery center. Dr. Waltzman will remove most of the skin and fat between your belly button and your pubic bone. The muscles will be tightened, and the belly button will be re-positioned to its normal location.* The incision stretches from hip to hip just above the pubic bone.* It is normal to have drainage tubes under the skin for a few days. These drains will be removed in the office by Dr. Waltzman.
Liposuction may also be used to improve the contour of your body in combination with a tummy tuck.* Small incisions are made in normal body folds and creases so that they are hidden.* A tummy tuck addresses the abdomen, including love handles. It does not address the hips, and thighs. Liposuction of these areas has the potential to nicely complement and enhance the results of a tummy tuck.*
After surgery you will receive pain medication and instructions on how to take care of the dressings and drains. It is very important to follow your surgeon’s instructions to promote proper healing.
What is a mommy makeover?
Having a baby is one of life’s greatest gifts. You have your bundle of joy, but it seems your body will never be the same. You struggle to get back in shape but those tough areas just won’t respond. You have lost all your baby weight but still have problem areas that won’t go away with diet and exercise alone. You can restore your post-pregnancy body with a customized mommy makeover and enhance your confidence and appearance.*
A mommy makeover typically combines several cosmetic surgery procedures in one operation, including a tummy tuck to remove loose skin and fat, liposuction for body contouring, breast augmentation or a breast lift.* Since a mommy makeover is tailored to your needs and goals, you can focus on the areas of your choice.*

He will provide you with your options and help you make an informed decision that best achieves your goals.*
Am I a good candidate for an abdominoplasty?
You may be a good candidate if you are in good health, have realistic expectations and desire to correct physical changes caused by:
- excess tummy skin
- stretch marks
- C-section scars and fat hanging over the scar, and
- A thick and undefined waist
If you smoke, you must quit smoking at least 6 weeks before surgery because smoking slows the healing process and increases the risk of complications. Obese patients, and patients with significant amounts of intra-abdominal fat, are generally not considered to be good candidates for an abdominoplasty.
Abdominoplasty is major surgery. Potential complications include swelling, bruising, and pain. You may also experience numbness at the incision site, which usually resolves over time.* After surgery, your activity will be limited for several weeks as your body heals. The final results of a tummy tuck will not be visible until most of the swelling resolves, usually after at least 2-3 months.*
Timing: The general recommendation is to wait at least six months after childbirth to give your body time to adjust to hormonal changes and to allow enough time to recover.* For best results it is important that your weight is stable.* If you are planning to loose weight, it is recommended to loose the weight before undergoing surgery.
More Children: If you are considering having more children, you would be well advised to postpone a tummy tuck until you are finished having children.

Liposuction is also known as liposculpture, suction lipectomy or just lipo. This procedure will diminish stubborn fat deposits and sculpt specific areas to enhance body contours and proportion. It can be applied almost anywhere there are localized fat deposits, from the calves and ankles to the thighs and inner knees and up to the neck. Liposuction can also be combined with, and enhance the outcome, of other cosmetic procedures.
Ideal liposuction candidates are adults who are bothered by areas of fat that don’t respond to diet or exercise alone, are within 30% of their ideal body weight, and have healthy, elastic skin and good muscle tone. In other words, the ideal patient should be as fit as possible before the procedure.
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed procedures because of its ability to contour and sculpt the body with little down time. The amount of fat that can be removed safely in one session is determined by your plastic surgeon. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction. However, in the hands of a skilled surgeon, like Dr. Waltzman, liposuction’s ability to contour the physique can create the appearance of weight loss.
The liposuction consultation
During your consultation with Dr. Waltzman, you will discuss your goals, your medical history and examine your body. He will take photos, and discuss your options, likely outcomes and risks. Then he will recommend a course of treatment to achieve your goals. You will have plenty of time to discuss your concerns and ask questions.
How is liposuction done?
Liposuction is performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia depending on the amount of fat to be removed. Dr. Waltzman will inject a local anesthetic to numb the areas to be treated and make small, discreet incisions in those locations. A saline tumescent solution will be infused into the tissue to be treated, to reduce bleeding and trauma before the fat is removed. Then a cannula, or small hollow tube, connected to a vacuum is inserted through the incisions into the fat layer beneath the skin. The cannula is maneuvered under the skin to target the specific areas chosen. This process breaks up the fat, which is then suctioned out.
After surgery, there will be swelling and bruising that will diminish as you heal. Recovery times vary, and final results may take up to 6 months. Your body will continue to heal, with subtle improvements for up to 12 months. As you heal, the skin contracts and shrinks to your new contours. You may be given a compression garment to assist in skin contraction so that an even contour is achieved. To achieve better satisfaction and long term success, it is important that you develop and maintain positive life-style changes including diet and exercise.

This is a surgical procedure that specifically addresses and enhances the appearance of the neck. This lift will tighten the neck muscles, remove excess skin and fat, and improve the profile of the neck. A necklift can only be accomplished with surgery.
What is body contouring?
After significant weight loss, from both diet and exercise or after bariatric surgery, excess skin and fat are often left behind. Body contouring involves the removal of sagging skin and fat in multiple areas, using various techniques. Body contouring is most commonly performed on the tummy or mid-section, arms, thighs, buttocks and even the face and neck. A “body lift” may combine several surgical procedures.
The goal is to improve the shape and tone of the underlying tissue and remove excess skin and fat. In regions where the skin has good elasticity and is able to conform to new body contours, liposuction may be an option for removal of excess fat. But, where skin elasticity is poor, a combination of a skin excision (removal) and liposuction may be recommended.
An upper body lift focuses on the breasts and back, as well as the arms. If you desire to reshape these areas, discuss this with Dr. Waltzman during your consultation.
Benefits of body contouring
Body contouring can rid you of loose and hanging skin, make your clothes fit better, remove the source of painful chafing, rashes and infections, and improve your self-esteem.
How is it done?
Although liposuction is effective at removing fat, it is not able to remove excess skin. The only way to effectively remove excess skin is with a surgical procedure. Having surgery means trading the excess loose skin for a scar. Scars do improve with time, and most patients are very happy to rid themselves of the excess skin for better fitting clothes and improved self-image.
Who is a candidate for body contouring?
- Bariatric surgery patients with significant tissue laxity in multiple body areas
- People who have successfully lost excess weight naturally by diet and exercise where excess skin and fat tissue remains
- You are at or near your ideal or desired body weight, and you have been weight stable for at least 6 months.
- You must be healthy and have no medical conditions that can impair healing or increase the risks of surgery
- You are committed to leading a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a healthy weight and fitness level
You would be well advised to wait until a year after your bariatric surgery or significant weight loss because studies show that those who wait a year before undergoing a body lift reduce their risk of complications, and shorten their hospital stay.
